Got me stumped so far....

Try this - from a terminal again type
  sudo aptitude install gparted

That should install the program you were looking for.
If it works, then we've proved it's  a GUI thing, and I think it's
time to file a bug on it.
If it doesn't work, then hopefully that output will be more enlightening.
