Actually, if booting with a _non-bootable_ USB stick plugged in causes the
boot process to hang that means that booting from USB _is_ possible. It
just means it didn't find a boot loader when it found the USB stick. If
your system is either incapable of, or not configured for, booting from USB
then a USB stick is ignored at boot time.
Doubt all you want, but people _do_ boot from USB sticks: google "linux boot
pen drive"
