Ubuntu on an external drive---how to?

    I had the idea to boot from a USB memory stick and checked my bios. 
It has a thing called an odd name that help said included USB booting. I 
set that but no joy, a reboot with the USB memory left plugged in was a 
failure. I doubt that it will work.
