Putting a copy of the "live" CD seems to be the easiest way to test.
It will be up to date and very specific to your machine.
The default ISO image of Ubuntu is a live CD. Just pay attention to
the menu when you boot up the machine. The default is something like
"try out / test Ubuntu".
