Just had a thought - when it's frozen, does the Caps Lock button still work (i.e. does it switch the indicator LED on and off)?

If it does, *something* is still responding to the keyboard. As I understand it, Num Lock is a toggle on the keyboard itself - so long as the keyboard has power the numlock button will turn the num lock LED on and off. But Caps Lock is an OS toggle, so if there is power but no signal, you can't turn the caps lock light on and off.

I remember this from a graphics issue I had a while ago which I thought was the whole system freezing, but in reality it was just the graphics card.
