Finally! A complete uninstall/reinstall brought up the next little 
problem: Error -1909 Device not accessible. The solution was easy: edit 
/etc/group and add my usename to the virtualbox group.
After a logoff/logon I was back in business, until I hit error -102, 
drive not accessible (or to that effect)
So I dumped the whole machine, which was created with wrong kernel 
versions. After I had created the new vm I worked as expected.
