Hardy: Firefox and(lack of) Java Applets

Having googled, it seems as though java applets are not working correctly under Firefox ( 2 and 3 b). All suggestions for getting this problem fixed already exist on my friend's lappy (Dell Precision M60)

The Java Version test works fine, I can see the file upload applet on my machine (both running Hardy)

The only difference between here FF plugins and mine, is that I have 2 versions of libflashplugin installed.

The Java applets for the sites affected (Facebook and myphotoalbum) are okay under Opera. So, I think it it could be a link to a library problem.

Any help would be great.

Java 6 is running and java-plugin has been installed.

I give up!!
