I have done this in the past. A bit of a kludj, but once the drives
were back in the original machines they worked fine.
Alternatively I suppose he might install the smaller footprint
Xubuntu, and then try to install the ubuntu-desktop. And then he can
add any ubuntu-specific programs he wants from the repository. I
haven't tried that approach (my old laptop had 384mb) but IIRC (and
will be corrected promptly if wrong) it should install sans issues
on a laptop with 256mb.
Oh...I presume some of that 256mb is being given to video, which
could be reducing the available memory to 240/248mb. Hence the
message about not having enough memory to do the install.
