Very weird...I've a Patriot USB thumbdrive that works fine, and 2
external drives from WD (the drivebooks), and 1 external drive enclosure
that I stuck in a generic 40 gig drive and it came up fine as well.

See above.

On the desktop, and in the filesystem in /media, using...off the top of
my head I don't remember, but it's the automounting daemon handling it.
I just plug them in.

ls /media
cdrom cdrom0 cdrom1 disk disk-1
disk and disk-1 are my 250 gig USB drives.

What is in your logs? My 8.04 is almost completely up to date...I see
the updater icon in my toolbar this morning, but wasn't there yesterday.
I did have a short term problem with...I think it was the avahi daemon
not seeing my drives that were plugged in and powered up until I logged
off and back in after a few minutes, or I'd have to try unplugging and
plugging in the drives a couple times. But that seemed to be fixed after
a couple updates came out a week or two later.
