Here's something else you could try:

Assuming that your UBUNTU is working properly.

1. Run UBUNTU
2, Go to Systen > Administration >  Synaptic Package Manager
3. Search  > Type in Firefox
A search will start to find Firefox----you will eventually see a few 
selections
4. Click the first Firefox box and follow the instructions -- Apply
should install Firefox

Go to the applications menu
Go to internet
You will see an icon  Firefox Web Browser
Right click the icon----select "Add this launcher to the desktop"

This should put you in business with Firefox.    If you have experience
with Firefox in Windows, it sets up the same way in UBUNTU
