Try this (one at a time and in the order given):
sudo apt-get install --reinstall locales
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf.opensymbol
sudo fc-cache -fv
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop
