No, I don't think it is a problem with the hard drive but with the CD 
drive or the CD itself. The squashfs is only used on the CD, not on the 
hard disk. Maybe you could burn the CD with a lower speed and try again. 
But first you should check the CD for errors at the boot menu of the CD.

Yes and no. There is no direct path from 6.10 to 7.10. You would have to 
upgrade to 7.04 first and then from 7.04 to 7.10. As it is a first 
install, I would prefer to use 7.10 right away, because it saves a lot of 
download time.
