Last Known Good only resets any newly installed drivers back to their
predecessor. And I mean newly. If you install new hardware, reboot and
things are fine, then congrats you've just created a new Last Known Good
configuration. FYI unless a hardware driver was installed in your last
Windows session LKG won't do you any good.
Did you perchance install new hardware just before this happened? What
was the last thing you installed on Vista?
If Windows doesn't even come up in safe mode then you are in trouble.
This does not sound like a problem which can be fixed by simply cleaning
the registry. This sounds like a corrupt registry or corrupt disk.
FSCK the partition, does it have any errors? If not then your OS is
probably hooped and your time is better spent backing up and
reinstalling than figuring out the problem.

I'm anxious to hear if there are.

argh. that's unfortunate.
