I had this exact problem with an old desktop system that I
donated to a local non-profit. I was installing Feisty Fawn
(7.04) for them and it was a no go. Turned out that there
wasn't enough memory in the desktop to complete the install
graphically. I downloaded the alternate CD from here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

IMPORTANT: Before clicking on the "Start Download" button, you
need to click the box at the bottom of the page that states:
"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does
not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer."

You should be able to complete your installation with the
alternate cd.

Hope this helps.

Take Care,

Mike
