questions on 32 or 64 bit CPU etc

Sounds like the HD is toast but just for shits and giggles if the drive is
set to master try cable select. I would also try what David said and install
it in a computer to check HD. Should show up in bios. Also, could try a
different hard drive in the enclosure to make sure that the usb isn't bad on
that. Way to have it backed up though.
