yes.  my 2.5" enclosure actually has a power lead which i can connect to
a second usb port.  i've found it is not required for most uses but
figure if i ever run into another machine with flaky usb ports i can
possibly run power to it from one machine (my laptop say) and connect it
to the other.  (and pray for no static or power surges!)

well sounds like you've covered all the bases and either the drive is
dead or the enclosure has problems.  if you're not ready to give up on
that drive yet the last thing to do is remove it from the enclosure and
install it in a machine (laptop i guess although you can find adapter
kits to mount 2.5" drives in regular drive bays), then boot from a live
cd and see if it is recognized (and did the bios see it when the machine
was booted?  is it set to autodetect the drive parameters or are they
programmed into the bios?).

argh.  wish it hadn't come to this.  good on you for having backups.
