How to properly compile a kernel?

Cononical don't want that. You have to use they stock kernel.
All these documentations are incomplete.
They have split the kernel in several packages:
kernel-image, kernel-modules, restricted-modules
If you use the method "apt-get source ..." you will see that you basically
have to rewrite debian/rules and the same game with restricted-modules and
so on. The method to use the git-repository is nothing better.
I think it would be easier if you use a kernel from kernel.org and if you
have hardware which needs a proprietary driver, download these sources
from the vendor or where ever they resides.
I use Linux since approximately 15 years and I compiled a lot kernels build
hole systems, but this theatre with the Ubuntu kernel is simply annoying.
There are other distributions, have a look.
