However, I have no problem printing (email) from Evolution (evolution
2.12.1) on Gutsy 7.10 to another 7.10 machine with a Canon MP750 (USB)
attached.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I had all sorts of
problems with Cups after 7.10 when apparmor was installed. I finally had
to resort to removing apparmor from all of my machines in order to get
Cups (and PDFPrinter) working again. It's possible that the bugs I was
having with apparmor are fixed by now, but I just couldn't afford to
spend any more time screwing around with apparmor.
