Duron boot problems

I have previously installed Gutsy on a HP PC using an AMD processor and this
was a complets success as a complete Linux novice.

I then tried to install Gutsy on two identical PCs which have Elite
motherboards IDE drives and AMD Duron 1300Mhz processors.

This has failed miserably so far and I don't know why. I have searched the
lists and forums and tried a number of things including looking at the
loading by deleting "quiet splash" and adding "all_generic_ide"

So what happens is that we get to a nice light brown screen where the mouse
cursor can be moved about.
This eventually freezes and that's it nothing else happens.

If I do a normal "quiet splash" boot I get the following two lines

(initramfs) (75.417755) ata 1. 00:exception emask 0x0 S ACT 0x0 SErr 0x0
action 0x2 frozen

(162.526738)ata.01 : cmd c8/00 : 08:00 : 2D :C9/00 : 00:00 : 00:00/F4 /TAG 0
cd3 0x0 data 4096 in

These two lines just keep repeating.

I have researched this but can't find any obvious answer to this as looking
at the splash screen seems to indicate everything is loading ok.

Can anyone suggest anything ? One of the PCs is running XP and that is fine.
The other just has an empty partition.
