New to linux questions

Howdy folks,

I am running a gateway 7120 laptop and just put Gutsy (64bit) on it.  The
specs are AMD64 3400+ running an ati radeon xpress 200m graphics card.  

Now the issues; I managed to get the wireless card working by using
restricted drivers.  Did something similar to the graphics card.  When I
checked for, I believe, direct draw capabilities before goofing with xgl, it
came up as yes, after installing x-server, or something similar named, it
says direct draw is a no.  I managed to monkey something and got it to allow
desktop effects, though now the whole thing is crawling.  Being super new to
linux in general, what commands should I be using in terminal and what am I
looking for in the resultant information that can help me straighten out my
graphics problem?  I've tried so many tutorials that I've actually lost my
place and am going in circles.

Any help about which direction to head would be great.
