Swapping users gives occassional whiteout - all but the cursor.

This is on Gutsy.

When swapping between users, or, on occasions, coming back from the 
screensaver, the desktop is not displayed, I get a white screen instead, 
around which I can move the still visible desktop cursor.

When this happens I can get to a terminal screen as I'd expect and usually 
restart GDM, with the unfortunate that all my desktop applications are lost 
and need to be re-started.

The machine is used in a family environment, with multiple users, or so it is 
hoped, if I can get user swapping to work reliably. 

What log files should I peruse to get more information about this problem?  
Alternatively, anyone know the problem and cure already?
