That means you had a bad download. Double check that you're using the
correct md5sum for the iso you downloaded, though. It can be easy to
look at, say, the alternate iso md5sum when you should be looking at the
desktop iso md5sum.

Many people have installed on an external hard drive. Plug in the drive,
tell ubuntu to install there, and when it asks about where to put the
boot loader, tell it to put it on the external drive.
