Settings applications to always open on certain desktops

I totally agree that this should work automatically with session saving,
and I hate that it doesn't. This and similar questions frequently come
up on the list, and I always give the same answer: If you use the
metacity window manager (the Gnome default), then you want to install
devilspie. Otherwise I have no clue
