Display screen on a beamer

I have been able to make this work using NVidia TwinView. I believe you
should be able to get it to work with other two-screen configurations as
well.
If you are using NVidia, I can send you my relevant xorg.conf file.
One thing about this approach is that if the nVidia doesn't detect an
external monitor when it starts, it uses just the laptop screen. So you
have to restart X after hooking up the external display.
(I am guessing that "beamer" is another way of saying projector, and not a
reference to your BMW automobile. <g>)
