Another data point.  I am using Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64, and Firefox
2.0.0.12.  The following file plays in the window provided or in a
pop-up window.

mms://a1156.v87526.c8752.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1156/8752/1203304003000/origin.media.cbc.ca/windows/news/features/onlineident-080217.wmv

In my Preferences...Content..File Types, it says to play "wmv" with
"Windows media player plugin"
