I got tired of messing with this crap (sun/macromedia and the like
aren't very good on releasing 64bit versions of their stupid,
ubiquitously used software).  

Thus I now run a 32-bit version of firefox and recommend you do the
same, if possible in ubuntu.  You'll need some 32 bit libraries, but
then 32bit plugins like (working versions of) java and potentially more
recent flash will be available.
