The long sad story re intel/i810/i845 on Intrepid 8.10 seems to start here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/259385
[Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards]

I loaded 810 on the i845 machine and no compiz. The xorg.conf file that
I suggested seems to not work also. Luckily I have 8.04.1 on the other
drive that I can boot into to compare (compiz works just fine there),
but my recommendation to Shiva is to wipe 8.10 and reinstall 8.04.1 - at
least that way he can still use the depreciated i810 driver and use
compiz as well... even if the fonts are still a bit blurry. Regarding
font issues; I think that it is the old 'auto hinting' issue raising
it's head again. I do not have issues w/autohinting on a .22 Hitachi
monitor, but do have them with a .28 Dell 1800fp LCD monitor (both on
Hardy).
