You would need a tv capture card, but really, this is the *long* way
around the the problem.  Getting DVD playback to work properly on your
Ubuntu box is the way to go.

A quick search of my archive shows that you must be one of our most
prolific question askers since April 2007, but unless I'm blind (which
is possible, thins only being an eyeballs scan) I see no thread about
your dvd playback issues.  Maybe you can be more specific with what
didn't work?
