Neither 8.04 or 8.10 will boot on my hardware so I am stuck at 7.10

Have you tried getting rid of the "quiet" and "splash" options on the
boot line? If so, what is displayed when the boot hangs up and/or
right before the busybox prompt?
Have you tried booting from the alternate CD?
