ATI Radeon HD 3470XT problems

Hi!

I need some help configuring the ATI Radeon HD 3470XT on my new Acer
Travelmate 704G32Mi laptop.

I'm only able to boot into the command prompt by adding text to the end
of the kernel-line in grub.

I've edited /etc/gdm/gdm.com and added a custom command for xrandr to
set the resolution to 1280x800, downloaded everything related to fglrx
and ran aticonfig --initial.

I've manually checked the xorg.conf file and it looks allright.

The computer boots up fine until it starts the gdm - the screen goes
blank but I hear the sounds (the drumroll and then the opening fanfare
of opening gnome) so basically the systems running - blind.

This is really getting frustrating so any help is appreciated.
