thanks for all of the replies. i really wasn't seeking any help. i was
trying to pass on what i had found out about installing the restricted
nvidia driver that shipped with 8.10 for my graphics card and introduce
myself to the list, since i am new.
what i am basically using this distro for is email and surfing the web.
because i have so much invested in software for windows, i do most of my art
on a xp box. i have toyed with a dual boot system and found that it didn't
work very well for me, but then again it was a microsuse (opensuse) distro.
i may look into using ubuntu as the other os for a dual boot system on my
laptop later.
i have to say that i am satisfied with the current video driver. i'm just
looking for a linux distro that will work out of the box with my hardware,
and i think that ubuntu is a better distro for windows transitioners than
microsuse. it is a change to go from kde to gnome, but not that difficult
to learn.
there are plans in the works to use ubuntu for maintaining my web site, but
not at this time. i need to get another piece of hardware.
speaking of hardware, i inhereted the computer that i currently have ubuntu
on. here are the specs:
ubuntu 8.10
p2 350mhz processor
1 gb ram
pny geforce fx5200 (256mb ram) video card (detected and configured)
sabrent 6 channel 5.1 sound 3d pci sound card (detected and configured)
off-brand ethernet card (detected and configured)
2 - usb 1 ports
i have come to like ubuntu over opensoft (opensuse). i know that steve
ballmer is laughing up his sleeve, because opensoft is having many problems
at the moment. i am glad that i have found a stable version of linux to
run. i thought for a while that i may be stuck with windoze.
cheers,
dwain
