John, I finally got sound to work on NX:

XP/NX to Hardy (get sound from hardy on the XP machine)
Intrepid/NX to Hardy [1] (get sound from hardy on the Intrepid machine)

Hardy/NX to Hardy - not working (yet). Sound still appears only on the
server machine.

It's a little choppy (buffering issues I suppose, or ESD in general,
even over a direct lan), but it does now work (including playing Rhythmbox)!

I got it to work by installing esound-clients and gstreamer0.10-esd:

sudo apt-get install esound-clients gstreamer0.10-esd

Or use synaptic.

I'm not sure which one got it to work, perhaps it needs both. But those
are the only two that I installed today & immediately afterwards tried
via NX and sound is now working.

[1] I'm having some issues with NX server on the laptop that Intrepid is
installed on at the moment. So I was not able to test going the other
way (anything _to_ the intrepid machine), I'll try later when I get the
laptop sorted out.
