Opening unknown filetypes from Firefox: KDE users please confirm

Binary? Execute? These are words that my Kubuntu-using mother in law
does not know. She wants to choose from a list of PROGRAMS, preferably
with icons next to each choice.

I don't need a list of 'appropriate' applications, a list of all
applications will do. But pointing the user to her home directory with
the hope that she will know the name of the executable she needs, and
where to find it in the filesystem (or that there _is_ a filesystem
beyond the visible files in /home/user/) is asking too much.
