If you decide to give hand coding a try I would recommend the O'Reilly 
book  HTML & XHTML The Definitive Guide by Chuck Musciano & Bill 
kennedy. It is nice to have complete control over your pages and easier 
to ensure that pages work the way you want in a variety of browsers.
I personally like GEdit for coding html as it color codes the tags 
making errors easy to find.
