I don't think so - but if you do, just reinstall

So, synaptic in fact _doesn't_ state the opposite. Synaptic (actually just
the package description) agrees with me. In fact, the upgrade-manager now
_forces_ the -desktop package, which is the sole problem with a situation
like yours, because if you install tpb, the next upgrade will remove it
when it reinstalls ubuntu-desktop.
