KDE4.0 had a feature to create a plasmoid for every item in the Desktop 
folder.  I haven't seen it on any of the KDE4.1 setups I've used.  You can 
have similar functionality if you put a folder view pointing to ~/Desktop on 
the desktop.  While perhaps not as visually appealing folder views have some 
interesting features, like being able to apply filters to them.  Additionally, 
you are not limited to one, so you could have one for ~/Documents as well.
