Jake.
I hope that I am not confusing things, but, if you are starting again
with XP and Ubuntu, this is what I have done. I think that it is a
very 'safe' method!
I have two hard drives in my machine. hda has an XP installation on it.
I had this before I added the second hard drive.
When I was ready to install Ubuntu, I disconnected the XP hard drive for
safety. Then I installed Ubuntu. As there was only hdb connected,
Ubuntu installed itself on to this drive, putting grub on to the hdb
MBR.
Then I reconnected hda.
I now have the two operating systems, completely separate, on their own
hard drive.
When I start the computer, while the BIOS is booting, I press F8. (This
is for my motherboard, others may require a different key to be
pressed). Up comes a menu to select whether I want to boot hda, hdb,
either of my two DVD drives, or my floppy drive. So I can choose
whether to run XP on hda, or Linux on hdb.
Just an idea for you.
Keith.
