Black Screen

Options received thus far seem to indicate new user should tread very carefully here.
One of options was something to do with PCI card, another b 43-phy0 and b43/ucode5.fw which appeared on black screen. Also something being needed to add to my wireless chip, a driver I think. (I am not wireless)
All of this being said is it possible to start over with 8.04 Live CD. If so must I format that drive that ubuntu resides on presently.
If that is an option can I do it on gparted.
Finally I will entertain any suggestions that are not beyond my limited capability
