Thanks for the reply. It turns out I was able to find a single entry on the
web for this - but it's good news - "(PCI-SA-112E in specific, which has the
Sil 3512 chipset) & it seems as though OS doesnt like booting from a drive
on this card after it progresses from grub (Even though it works like a
champ on Ubuntu 8.04)"  - and the card was cheap (under $20).

I pulled the card and the IDE cable from the mobo and it will boot the Ubu
CD. I'm not sure if I could install the drivers in the LiveCD env or not
(might be worth a try), but short of that, this box will probably need an
IDE drive to install 8.04 and the drivers. A bit of a catch-22, but I dug up
an old IDE drive that I'm checking now to update the badblock table. If it's
runnable I'll try loading 8.04 there, install the drivers and then
installing Ubuntu onto one of the SATA drives and see if a reboot without
the IDE works (I'll also upgrade the BIOS to the latest version to see if
that helps)
