That's interesting indeed.  I regularly max out my 10Mbit line at home 
with only my laptop running Gentoo, or my Fedora desktop.  (All 
wireless).  In fact, running 802.111g, I can hit close to 51Mbps between 
systems on it.

Sounds to me like the wireless settings just need tweaking on your system.
