Problem with receiving updates and software

This would likely be because 6.10 reached end of life in April 2008.
This also means that 6.10 does not receive security updates anymore.

It is therefore strongly recommended to upgrade to a newer version. Or
rather, since 6.10 is already so old, you are probably better off
installing 8.04 LTS.

Upgrading to 7.04 (the only upgrade path that is available for 6.10)
would help you little, since 7.04 will reach end of life in October. You
would then have to upgrade to 7.10 right away.

That's why I recommend to install 8.04 LTS right away. You seem not to
be interested in installing/upgrading a lot, therefore an LTS release is
probably the best choice for you. LTS means "Long-term Support", and the
desktop version of 8.04 will have support until April 2011 (server
version even longer).
