Further work shows that running "sudo dpkg --configure -a gives the
following error msg:

jim at JimsBook:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 12823
package `openoffice.org-java-common':
 `Conflicts' field, invalid package name `
jim at JimsBook:~$

Could this be what is causing the problem?

Jim
