My users like to glance up and see that their data has been saved. When
they are immersed in thought while writing something it is easy to forget
to save.
Frankly, I probably caused this problem as I moved folks from MS to Linux.
I gave examples of how MS had no idea of what was going on but Linux
did. This save icon was one example which is now getting stuck in my
ear. But my favorite is the mouse:
I would take them to Win Explorer (folder view) and have them scroll their
mouse on the left side. And then move to the right side and scroll again.
Guess what happens - the left side still scrolls. You have to click the mouse
on the side you want to scroll to tell MS where the mouse is.
Then I would take them to a Linux box and show them the difference. They
were very surprised. I called this a foundation problem. Amazing that
Bill didn't even know where the mouse was unless you told him. On rare
occasion some of my Linux users use a Win box and then comment about
the mouse. Hey it's just one click - but it now drives them crazy.
All that said - I am the guilty party. I taught them that Linux had a better
foundation and was much more aware of what was going on. It's something
like power windows on your car. You really don't need them and in an
accident you would probably be better off with the crank. But who wants
to give them up once you have used them?
