Gmail shouldn't actually break threading. Gmail itself doesn't care about
threading, but seems to properly maintain the references so that threads
are maintained. It simply treats "sent" mail as "read", and when a mail
comes back from a list with the same message-id as a message anywhere in
your gmail mailbox, it is ignored. I find it somewhat more than moderately
annoying, but not a real problem.
