Like you I installed 8.04. I did it on a separate partition, but just
the same had problems with the audio, not the video.
I could get sound from all but the plugins for my browsers. I went
round and round with it and finally tried to load Mplayer. This told
me I did not have the correct codexs and gave me a chance to download
them.
So don't give up, Ubuntu and all will help you.
