| Linux which is essentially the Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code
| recompiled (another similar project is CentOS but I consider SL more
| organised).

try the text based install cd instead, go here
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
and be sure to check the checkbox for the alternate cd
