That can't hurt. One other thing just came to my mind, though. I
remember to have had unspecific I/O errors like this, too. This was when
I placed my external HD and other gear on a chest and ran a long cable
to my laptop, via a cheap USB hub.

It turned out that the combination of long cheap cable (a bit more than
the 5 meters that the USB spec allows) and cheap hub was a no-no.
Changing to higher-quality stuff fixed it.

You might want to check cable length and quality, etc. (When the Maxtor
worked in Windows, did you use the same cable and hub setup?)
