Mounting my EHD, editing Fstab

i've had this maxtor ehd working fine on this pc with windows  
i also downloaded the seagate software and had it working on the laptop at work
with windows

my 250 MB usb storage key works fine with ubuntu in all ports  
someone suggested i get a windows pc and run scan / defrag
