It's a communication forum for a community.  And a community depends on 
members that aren't, as a rule of thumb, acting like selfish dicks.

If a great majority were to suddenly say they've had enough and leave 
the forums, because, after all, it's "just a mail list", that's one less 
resource for users to go to for help or community feeling.

And it does matter since every bit has an influence.  Ubuntu, or Linux 
in general, grows and grows because of community influence and 
volunteers that don't need self appointed jerks trying to poke buttons 
just for a reaction in a group of people that generally congregate to 
offer help to others but in return ask for some simple courtesy of 
composing messages in a manner that make it seem as if you know how to read.
