mysql will not start, nothing in logs :(

It was stopping then failing to start (i.e. [fail] rather than [OK]).
I have tried removing it and when I try to reinstall it hangs during
apt-get install with:

Selecting previously deselected package mysql-server.
Unpacking mysql-server (from .../mysql-server_5.0.45-1ubuntu3.3_all.deb) ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld

                  [ OK ]
Setting up mysql-server-5.0 (5.0.45-1ubuntu3.3) ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
